In the dictionary of Freemasonry, two words stand out with particular resonance and depth:
"free" and "accepted."
These terms not only define our craft but also enrich our understanding of its historical context and evolution. The term "free" in Freemasonry harks back to the ancient operative craftsmen, whose skills were deemed essential for the welfare of both church and state.
Unlike other laborers of their time, these craftsmen were not subjected to the usual feudal restrictions. Instead, they were granted the liberty to travel, work, and live freely - a privilege underscoring their importance. On the other hand, the word "accepted" carries its unique significance. During the Middle Ages, the appeal of Freemasonry extended beyond its craft to the broader learning and societal benefits it offered.
Skilled and educated men (scarce outside the monastic communities), were drawn to the Freemasonry not necessarily to practice the craft but to partake in its intellectual and social advantages.
These individuals were known as "accepted" Masons, a practice that likely began when guild companies started admitting patrons for whom they worked.
Over time, this practice expanded, and by the eighteenth century, the "accepted" members outnumbered the operatives, paving the way for the transition from a purely operative to the speculative Freemasonry we practice today.
Understanding these terms sheds light on the adaptive nature of Freemasonry throughout history, a testament to our enduring principles of liberty, learning, and brotherhood. These concepts are not merely historical footnotes but are foundations that should continue to inspire and guide us.
Congratulations to Bro. Robert Davis & Bro. Jeff Maier on receiving their Zarubbabel Award pins! They were presented their pins by DEO, WB Brian Fitzgerald at our last special meeting! . . .
