There will be three site visits – each pretty different – and learn a bit about the types of programs the CTE team has developed at Sac City Unified Schools – as well as a key aspect of Sacramento City College’s (Community College) CTE programing – their Maker Space. I believe that when you have seen these programs and get a feel for their potential to provide for kids from under-resourced communities, you will agree that they provide a great opportunity for us to make a difference up there. Here is the proposed schedule for the day.
930 AM: Meet at Sac City USD District Office: 5735 47th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95824 – (parking instructions below)
Superintendent Lisa Allen and the Sac City USD CTE Team to provide brief history and overview of CTE at SCUSD. Where are we going? What kids are we serving? What are our challenges?
Goal: Overview of CTE programing and SCUSD progress/plans to expand CTE opportunities to more traditionally under-resourced students and communities.
10:15 AM: Get on a bus John F. Kennedy High School
Tour the CTE programs at JFK, including both the automotive and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) areas. Staff to arrange a demonstration of one of the high-tech machines.
Goal: Show the evolution of “Vocational Education” to the new CTE – and demonstrate the real world and practical opportunities and pathways which exist in CTE at JFK.
11:15 AM Arrive at School of Engineering and Science (SES)
Tour and presentation by Ken Davis and his Team. See all the amazing robotic stuff – perhaps a demo!
Goal: Show the energy and excitement around the high-tech opportunities for kids – and the way this experience acts as a motivation to learn STEM skills.
1215 PM: Arrive at Sac City College Maker Space > https://scc.losrios.edu/student-resources/makerspace
Lunch at Sac City College – then a tour the Sac City College Maker Space, as well as some of their CTE classrooms. Meet their staff and leadership. Learn about the role the Maker Space plays as a portal for kids to experiment with tech and entrepreneurship.
Goal: Get a feel for the learning pathway that might exist for a high school student to progress to a career in one of many CTE jobs.
2:00 PM: Wrap for the day – and head back to the district office before driving home.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for everything. S&F – Doug
From Daniel Spinka at SCUSD:
Please park anywhere in the front of Serna and enter through the front door where you see the double- doors. We will have a staff member greet you and walk you up to the meeting room. There is an elevator if anyone needs it. Please make sure you go in the building shown below and not the smaller building, which is our enrollment center.
Thanks all. I think that this is going to be an interesting and informative day.
Best- Doug
