History and collections
The Henry W. Coil Masonic Library and Museum was established in 1996 with a generous gift from Henry Wilson Coil, Jr., made in honor of his father. The collections chronicle the history of Freemasonry in California and its place within the global fraternity.
The archives houses written materials such as books, periodicals, manuscripts, Grand Lodge records, lodge documents, membership registers, early Masonic publications, and ritual monitors. Artifcats include aprons, regalia, medals, photographs, certificates, artwork, and other objects.

The Masonic Apron
The Masonic apron is arguably one of the most recognizable of Masonic symbols. Revered as an emblem of innocence and honor, its evolution has been long and varied: from rough swaths of leathered hides to protect the clothing to richly decorated works of ceremonial folk art. This short documentary, produced by the Masonic Grand Lodge of California and the Henry Wilson Coil Library and Museum of Freemasonry, that offers new insight into one of Masonry’s most treasured ritual garments.

The Henry W. Coil Library and Museum of Freemasonry is located within the California Masonic Memorial Temple in San Francisco. Objects from the collection are displayed throughout the building, including in Freemasons Hall and the Grand Lodge Officers’ areas.
Guided tours of the Temple are available by appointment. To schedule a visit, contact jevans@freemason.org.
